Six months into the pandemic and we’re realizing that working from home has some benefits. But it’s not without its pitfalls. Staying productive can be difficult without outside stimulation. Productivity and performance matter. If you’re struggling with productivity, here are some tips to put you back in the driver’s seat.

Stick to a Schedule

Tell friends and family that you are working and can’t be disturbed. Interruptions break your focus.

Invest in Comfort Where it Matters

Chances are, if you’re working from home, you’re probably sitting at a laptop or computer. Spend money where it makes sense, a good office chair. You can cut corners in other places.

Work in Chunks of Times

Split your day into windows of 90 to 120 minutes. Work on the tasks that you need to get done in blocks of time, rather than pressing through until a project is complete. You really can’t focus for more than two hours without a break.

Schedule Breaks

If you were at work, you’d get up to get coffee or talk to a coworker. Make sure you’re getting breaks in your home office.

Turn Off Notifications

Disruptions break your focus. Turn off email and phone notifications to concentrate in your block of time. Respond to people at the end of your block of time.

Have Structure

Structure will keep you productive during the day. Have a place to work. Create a system that keeps you on task. Use it.

Clean Up

Keep your office tidy. Productivity increases when you have things in their place and you’re not overwhelmed by clutter.

Have a Night Routine

Set the tone for the next day by having a routine to close out your workday. Your brain will thank you. Name your most important task and have it ready to go.

Make a Morning Routine

When you worked out of the office, you had a routine that helped you transition from homeowner to employee. To be more productive, get a morning routine that helps you take off one hat and put on the other.

See Your Home Office as an Advantage

How you view working from home will affect your attitude. Focus on the benefits and have a positive outlook.
